The last witch was condemned to death in Hertford town, 1712.
The witch in question was Jane Wenham, The villagers claimed they had seen a cat with a face resembling her own and were profoundly disturbed. The trail took place at the Hertford Assizes before Chief Justice Powell, who subsequently ridiculed the who idea of witchcraft. The jury, however held a different opinion. and despite the judges summing up of the case found the women guilty. The judge had no choice but to condemn her to death.
